The Monroe Township Construction Office provides permits and inspections in accordance with the New Jersey State Uniform Construction Code, commonly known as the “Code”. One of the purposes of the Code is to permit to the fullest extent feasible the use of modern technical methods, devices and improvements, including pre-manufactured systems, consistent with reasonable requirements for the health, safety and welfare of occupants or users of buildings or structures. The issuance of a permit is the device required to enable the Construction Department to provide this service.

Therefore, before a building or structure can be constructed, enlarged, repaired, renovated, altered, reconstructed, demolished or the use changed of a building or structure or portion thereof, or to install or alter any equipment, the owner or contractor should contact the Construction Office to make application for necessary permits.

The proper permit serves as protection against contractors who may not follow mandated laws promulgated for consumer protection and is also important for insurance purposes. All home improvement contractors must be registered by the State of New Jersey. For your protection, prior to hiring a contractor, please make sure they have the proper licenses and registrations. If you sign the permit application and allow an unregistered or unlicensed contractor to perform work at your home, you are assuming all responsibility.

The enforcement staff is state licensed and employed by the township. Tax dollars are not used to fund the department and its functions; it is fully funded by permit fees. The enforcement staff consists of the Construction Code Official, Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire Sub-Code Officials supported by a professional assistant staff. All sub-code officials are available Monday through Friday. The best time to reach one of the sub-code officials is between the hours of 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM. The Construction Office is open from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Our public service commitment is to provide a professional, courteous and efficient permitting process. We strive to offer a streamlined process as practically possible.
