The Mon­roe Town­ship Con­struc­tion Office pro­vides per­mits and inspec­tions in accor­dance with the New Jer­sey State Uni­form Con­struc­tion Code, com­monly known as the “Code”. One of the pur­poses of the Code is to per­mit to the fullest extent fea­si­ble the use of mod­ern tech­ni­cal meth­ods, devices and improve­ments, includ­ing pre-manufactured sys­tems, con­sis­tent with rea­son­able require­ments for the health, safety and wel­fare of occu­pants or users of build­ings or struc­tures. The issuance of a per­mit is the device required to enable the Con­struc­tion Depart­ment to pro­vide this service.

There­fore, before a build­ing or struc­ture can be con­structed, enlarged, repaired, ren­o­vated, altered, recon­structed, demol­ished or the use changed of a build­ing or struc­ture or por­tion thereof, or to install or alter any equip­ment, the owner or con­trac­tor should con­tact the Con­struc­tion Office to make appli­ca­tion for nec­es­sary permits.

The proper per­mit serves as pro­tec­tion against con­trac­tors who may not fol­low man­dated laws pro­mul­gated for con­sumer pro­tec­tion and is also impor­tant for insur­ance pur­poses. All home improve­ment con­trac­tors must be reg­is­tered by the State of New Jer­sey. For your pro­tec­tion, prior to hir­ing a con­trac­tor, please make sure they have the proper licenses and reg­is­tra­tions. If you sign the per­mit appli­ca­tion and allow an unreg­is­tered or unli­censed con­trac­tor to per­form work at your home, you are assum­ing all responsibility.

The enforce­ment staff is state licensed and employed by the town­ship. Tax dol­lars are not used to fund the depart­ment and its func­tions; it is fully funded by per­mit fees. The enforce­ment staff con­sists of the Con­struc­tion Code Offi­cial, Build­ing, Plumb­ing, Elec­tri­cal and Fire Sub-Code Offi­cials sup­ported by a pro­fes­sional assis­tant staff. All sub-code offi­cials are avail­able Mon­day through Fri­day. The best time to reach one of the sub-code offi­cials is between the hours of 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM. The Con­struc­tion Office is open from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
